Image used to show dental fillingsThe biggest threat to the health of your smile is tooth decay. Although it’s preventable, at least 92% of adults have had a cavity in a permanent tooth. Most cavities can be treated with dental fillings when found before significant damage occurs. Unfortunately, many people aren’t aware they have one until it has progressed in severity. Don’t worry, here’s how you can tell if you need a tooth-colored filling to get the quick care your smile requires.

Types of Tooth Decay

Believe it or not, there are many types of cavities. Your dentist will determine which is present to ensure a filling is a suitable treatment, such as:

  • Coronal Cavities: Both children and adults can experience the most common type of cavity. They are located on the chewing surfaces or between the teeth and can often be treated with a filling.
  • Root Cavities: Gum recession can leave the tooth roots exposed. Since they don’t have enamel to protect them, they are often susceptible to decay.
  • Recurrent Decay: Decay forms around existing fillings and crowns from plaque buildup. A filling can stop an infection from reaching the pulp to prevent needing a root canal.

Signs You Need a Dental Filling

Many cavities don’t cause any symptoms during the earlies stages of development, which is why visiting your dentist twice a year is crucial to detecting any weakened enamel. It isn’t until a cavity progresses symptoms can occur gradually, including:

  • Tooth sensitivity when eating certain foods, like those that are hot, cold, or sweet.
  • Floss tears when cleaning a particular tooth.
  • Visible damage to a prior filling.
  • Chipped or fractured tooth.
  • Food often gets stuck between certain teeth.
  • Dark spot or hole in a tooth.
  • Throbbing or sharp pain when biting on a tooth.

Dental Filling Process

Previously, cavities were treated with amalgam fillings that are made of a mixture of metals, including mercury. Although they are effective, there’s a better solution. Tooth-colored fillings don’t contain any mercury and blend in with your enamel to look natural.

A local anesthetic will be used to ensure you’re comfortable while your dentist removes any areas of damage. A weak acid is then applied to your tooth to open the pores in your enamel to ensure a strong bond. Your tooth is rinsed and dried before the composite resin material is placed on it, which has been previously shaded to match your enamel. A special light is used to quickly harden it to reduce your time in the dental chair. Your dentist will smooth and polish your tooth before you leave for a beautiful smile.
