4 Foods You Should Avoid After Teeth Whitening

Having bright pearly whites is one of the most important ways to feel confident about your smile. If this is something you want, then you’re probably considering getting teeth whitening. While the results are promising, you can only make the most of your enhanced pearly whites depending on how well you care for them. Although brushing and flossing are essential for keeping your teeth clean, so is your diet! Keep reading to learn about four foods you should avoid after completing your whitening treatment.

#1: Dark-Colored Foods

While there are plenty of treats that provide nutritious benefits, many of them can also darken your smile over time. These foods can include grapes, carrots, spinach (or dark, leafy greens), beets, cherries, pomegranates, and berries. It’s especially important to avoid these after teeth whitening, as this is when your pearly whites are at their most vulnerable to staining.

#2: Acidic Meals

During your whitening process, your dentist will use a professional bleaching agent to brighten your teeth. This can also temporarily weaken your enamel or make them more sensitive to hot or cold temperatures. For this reason, you’ll want to keep away from munching on acidic foods, which will wear down your enamel even further. Some of these meals involve citrus fruits (lemons, oranges, grapefruits, etc.), pickles, pineapples, and processed meats.

#3: Dark-Colored Beverages

One of the most common causes of tooth stains is consuming dark-colored drinks like tea, soda, and coffee. These beverages contain dark pigments that collect in the pores of your pearly whites, penetrating their surface and resulting in discoloration. It’s best to avoid these liquids immediately after a teeth whitening, or at least drink with a straw to minimize the contact with your smile. Be sure to also rinse your mouth with water right after finishing your beverage.

#4: Tomato Sauce

Have you ever noticed what happens to a white shirt after spilling tomato sauce on it? The same thing will happen to your newly brightened smile. Although tomato sauce is healthy for you, the red pigment and acidity can be detrimental to your whitening results. Instead, try eating a white cream sauce to better preserve the color of your pearly whites.

By avoiding these stain-causing foods, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your newly whitened smile. Be sure to also maintain good dental hygiene and visit your dentist often for checkups/cleanings to help make the most of your results!
