Girl after wisdom tooth extraction

Each year, about 5 million people in the United States have their wisdom teeth removed. This is because such a large percentage of people don’t have enough room in their mouth for them to erupt properly without causing issues in the mouth. No one enjoys having their teeth extracted, but you will have a much easier time if you follow your dentist’s instructions and an excellent aftercare regimen. Continue reading for some tips to aid you after wisdom tooth removal.

How Long Does Wisdom Tooth Recovery Take?

It can take up to two weeks in order for you to completely recover from your wisdom tooth extraction. Over the first 24 hours, blood clots will form, and the healing process will begin. For the next two to three days, you can expect inflammation in the mouth to improve. By the second week, stiffness, soreness, and bruising should fade away. At this time, most patients are able to resume their life as normal.

Tips for a Smooth Wisdom Teeth Removal Recovery

Here are some tips that can help your mouth to recover without complications:

  • Bite down on gauze: If the extraction site is bleeding, try biting down on a gauze pad to slow down the bleeding. This will help for a blood clot to form faster so you can begin the recovery process.
  • Ice pack: By using ice on the cheek, you can ease bruising and swelling that could follow your surgery. Apple ice to the area of the extraction site for about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Take pain relievers: Take pain medication as your dentist instructs. You might also need to take antibiotics to prevent infections from occurring during the healing process.
  • Soft foods: Sticking to a soft, nutritious diet is key after you get your wisdom teeth removed. This allows for your body to heal faster. Great options are soup, broth, mashed veggies, avocados, scrambled eggs, and Jell-O.
  • Keep your smile clean: Be very gentle when you are brushing your teeth. Avoid the area of the extraction site. Instead, rinse your mouth with warm saltwater after meals.
  • Rest: Your body will heal much better if you take it easy. Give yourself at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night.

You might not be looking forward to your wisdom tooth extraction, but by following the tips above and listening to the instructions of your dentist, recovery will be a breeze.
