Navigating dental insurance can often lead to a big headache. For instance, how can you be sure what’s covered and what’s not covered? What’s the difference between in-network and out of network? Thankfully, our team at Peery & Woolwine Family Dentistry has all the answers you need. We're happy to file all dental plans for the patient, even if we are not in-network providers.
Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Many people assume that traditional medical insurance and dental insurance are virtually the same, but this isn’t actually true. Medical insurance is designed around covering the cost of big emergencies, such as illnesses and physical injuries. On the other hand, dental insurance emphasizes prevention first. Most plans will pay for biannual dental checkups and cleanings, which means that patients will be more likely to have any potential problems diagnosed as early as possible, minimizing your year-to-year treatment cost.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Please keep in mind that every dental insurance plan is a little bit different and you should confirm available benefits with the company before committing to treatment. That said, most plans will offer the following benefits:
- Preventive care (such as biannual dental checkups and cleanings, fluoride treatment for children, etc) are covered at 100%.
- Minor restorative care (such as root canal therapy and tooth-colored fillings) are covered at around 70-80%.
- Major restorative care (such as dentures, crowns, and bridges) are likely to be covered at or near 50%.
In some cases, orthodontic treatment may also receive partial benefits, depending on the circumstances. Cosmetic dentistry is NOT covered by most plans.
